On Saturday morning, we drove from Nevada City to Grouse Ridge. The 6 to 7 mile hike in to Rock Lake was easy, mostly downhill the entire way, and we made good time. We scouted for camp spots around the lake, and some nice folks offered us the spot they were hanging out at since they were about to leave anyway - score! It was a great spot! We had great lake access, plenty of space to hang out, and great spots to set up our hammocks.
Once we had settled on our camp spot, Shanza surprised the guys with pizza and beer. Yum! After enjoying the treats, we set up camp and then went for a swim. The water was the perfect temperature for swimming, and we stayed in for a long time. We spent the evening sipping wine, enjoying our double-decker hammock hangout area, eating dinner, and listening to the best 90's hits that our neighbors across the lake were playing for all to hear.
When it got dark, Dave set up his camera to take photos of Comet NEOWISE, which we had a perfect view of from our campsite (though the bright moon made it difficult to see). We also used our star apps to identify and learn about new stars and constellations. The perfect relaxing evening to a fun day.
In the morning, we packed up camp, enjoyed our morning coffee, and had a quick breakfast before beginning our hike out. On the way out we hiked past many beautiful lakes. We decided to stop about half way and hop in at Island Lake - so refreshing! And absolutely beautiful.
The last part of the hike was the most difficult of the loop, pretty much entirely uphill, but we were rewarded when we arrived at the top - Kyle had brought ice cold cruisers for all! What a nice surprise :) We enjoyed our delicious Trumer Pils, then headed back home. What a delightful 24 hour trip - can't wait to return.
